World War II was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It was the most widespread war in history that included all the great powers who eventually formed two opposing military alliances, the Allies and the Axis.
World War II evolved out of issues left unresolved from the Great War and resentment over the harsh terms imposed by the Treaty of Versailles that fueled the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party.

Class timeline of the events leading up to WWII:
The United States was neutral country. They eventually became known as the Arsenal Democracy because they made all types of weapons and chose who they wanted to send them to. The US lent or leased arms and other supplies to "any country whose defense was vital to the US". The US also had the cash-and-carry act that allowed warring nations to buy US arms as long as they paid cash and transported them in their own ships.
The the United States entered the war when Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941
